The Discovery Curriculum – Semi-Formal
Our Discovery semi-formal curriculum is designed for students with complex needs, including Autism and Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), who are typically working within WS Progress Steps P4 to P8. It offers a life skills-based learning experience that builds essential foundations in Communication, Literacy, Numeracy, and understanding the world. Many of our learners require more time and repetition to embed new knowledge, so the curriculum is rooted in practical, real-life experiences that make learning meaningful and relevant. Communication is a core focus, and we use a total communication approach that includes Makaton, AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), and Communicate in Print to ensure all students can access content, engage in communication, and express themselves in ways that are meaningful and effective for them. The curriculum promotes key values such as independence and life skills, confidence and resilience, a strong sense of self, positive interaction with others, and a developing understanding of the wider world. Our aim is to empower every student to grow in confidence, build functional life skills, and become as independent and engaged as possible in their learning and future life.
