The Quest Curriculum – Semi-Formal
Our Quest semi-formal curriculum is designed for students with complex needs, including Autism and Significant Learning Difficulties (SLD), who are typically working within WS Progress Steps P6 to P9. While similar to our Discovery curriculum, Quest is tailored for our more cognitively able SLD learners who benefit from a fixed-based learning environment for most of their lessons. These students may require additional time to develop strong foundations in early Communication, Literacy, Numeracy, and Understanding the World, while also having the potential to excel in specific areas. Many have communication needs, so we embed a total communication approach across the curriculum—using Makaton, AAC, and Communicate in Print—to ensure all students can access content, interact with others, and express themselves in meaningful and effective ways. Repetition and overlearning are key strategies to support retention and success. Rooted in real-life, hands-on experiences, the Quest curriculum is underpinned by essential values: promoting independence, recognising and responding to individual needs, building communication skills, supporting meaningful interaction with others, and expanding students’ understanding of the world around them. Our goal is to provide a consistent, nurturing environment that helps learners grow in confidence, engage purposefully, and develop essential life skills for their future.
