Simon Harris – Outstanding Contribution to SEND

On Friday 7th February 2025 our esteemed colleague Simon Harris (Executive Headteacher at Wilson Stuart School) was awarded the first ever “Outstanding Contribution to SEND” award from The University of Wolverhampton. The award recognises individuals who have had a significant impact on special educational needs provision. Mr Harris was incredibly humble and surprised to receive the award during an inspiring education lecture he was delivering to students at the university. 

The surprise award was presented by key figures in Simon’s long career in special education.   Steve Hughes OBE was complementary of Mr Harris’ fantastic achievements over multiple years, calling him a “pioneer” in the field. Chris Wilson (Executive Headteacher at Queensbury School) spoke about how Simon has and continues to “Break Disability Barriers”,  creating a more inclusive and equitable education system for all . James Horspool (Headteacher at Meadows School) articulated Simon’s visionary leadership strengths and his ability to build teams that feel empowered to achieve.

The Education Impact Academy Trust is very proud to have Simon Harris working as part of the family of schools in the trust. His dedication, passion and vision has not only changed lives of countless students, families and staff in his own school but in the supporting other schools across Birmingham and wider. 

Chris Wilson stated ” Simon Harris has been a beacon of hope, an advocate for change and tireless champion for students with special educational needs in any school. The word “I can’t” is NOT in his vocabulary and his DNA is probably coded to say – “Better never ends !”

Carl Longmore (Course Leader BA Hons Primary Education and Responsibility for SEND – The University of Wolverhampton) indicated that he could not think of anyone more deserving of the award nationally and his contributions to inspire future educators is always powerful and inspiring.
